Crooked River Canyon and this bridge are certainly one of the most spectacular railroad-plus-nature ensembles around. Both the English and the German Wikipedia contain (different) pictures of it—take a look at them! Here, however, are my pictures from 1993!
This is Crooked River Canyon—almost vertical walls, some 300 feet high, at the bottom is the river:

If you first approach the bridge via the small park that was built there with a viewpoint, you can only see its upper part, which makes it appear rather unspectacular:

However, if you then get out and walk up to the abutment, you can see the size of the structure. The telegraph wires hanging freely over the canyon to the right look somewhat daring:

And then ... I had the idea that I had to go up there:

In return, I photographed Astrid from above:

I also took a picture of the river between the ties supporting the rails:

Just south of the bridge was a pair of block signals—a little further you can see the railings of the bridge, otherwise there is not much to see of it and the deep canyon:

I also took an image of the other signal. Both searchlights showed a green light, so they had no approach circuit. I noticed the interesting rock formations in the background only when I looked at this photo right now:

A train, unfortunately, was not to be seen anywhere. But at least I have these pictures of a big bridge, and a deep canyon!
