Signalling at Granville, 2023

Deutsche Version dieses Postings

The remote control center for the line from Argentan to Granville is located in Granville. I was allowed to take a quick look inside; on the display board you can see the operationally important stations, but not some of the stations in between, which I have indicated here in brackets:
  • Granville
  • Folligny Poste 2—junction to Coutances and Lison
  • Folligny Poste 1—junction to Avranche (near Mont St.Michel)
  • Villedieu-les-Poêles
  • (Vire)
  • Saint-Martin de Tallevende—points from single to double track.
  • Viessoix—points from double to single track.
  • Flers
  • (Briouze)
  • Saint Hilaire de Briouze—crossover
  • (Argentan—outside remote control)

Due to my lack of French, I could not discuss or ask question about the interlocking.
The following pictures are from the station area in Granville, starting with a track plan and a little history:

Granville has always been a terminus station, so I start with pictures of the stub tracks:

There was a lot going on in the small station at this time:

Many French terminus stations have retained some old track connections for switching locomotives, including Granville. A points lever between the buffer stops is used to reverse the two points via a linkage:

The SNCF signaling system is explained quite well on stellwerke.de—this may help a little with the following pictures:

Why the rails were not welded here is not clear to me:

This turnout is located in the area of the depot:

Finally, here are two types of apparatus whose purpose I don't know:

Finally, a picture of the station: On the left is the old station building alongside the tracks, across in front of it is the newer, later addition:
